London, UK – In a vibrant celebration of Diwali, the Labour Asians Society hosted an impactful gathering at the House of Commons, bringing together prominent government officials, Members of Parliament, councillors, mayors, and community leaders. The event was hosted by Baggy Shankar MP and attended by key figures within the Labour Party, who spoke about Diwali’s timeless values and the importance of unity across the nation.
The highlight of the evening was a special Diwali message from Sir Keir Starmer, Leader of the Labour Party, shared by Manish Tiwari, Co-Chair of the Labour Asians Society. “As we gather to celebrate Diwali, I extend my warmest wishes to you all on this joyous occasion. Diwali reminds us of the timeless values of light over darkness and the unity that binds our communities,” Starmer said. He further expressed gratitude to the Labour Asians Society for fostering community engagement, particularly during the recent election campaign, which had a profound impact. “May this Diwali bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to you and your loved ones,” Leader concluded.


Among the esteemed speakers, The Rt. Hon. Anneliese Dodds, MP, Minister of State for Development, Women, and Equalities, commended the Labour Asians Society’s commitment. She noted, “The connection we have as the UK with communities around the world enriches us greatly. We need to act together to tackle global inequality and climate challenges, while upholding racial equality here at home. The new Race and Disability Equality Bill will be essential in advancing these efforts.”
The Rt. Hon. Sir Stephen Timms, Minister of State for Work and Pensions, added, “I am delighted to be here and wish everyone a very happy Diwali. I am grateful for the Labour Asians Society’s efforts to bring people together within our party. This work is crucial to our mission and success.”

Additional speakers included Dawn Butler MP, who warmly welcomed attendees, emphasizing Parliament as a democratic home for all, and Navendu Mishra MP, who expressed the importance of unity among Asian communities. “Asian communities have more in common than things that divide us,” said Mishra, “and it is encouraging to see organizations come together under the Labour Asians Society’s banner.”
Virendra Sharma, former MP and Patron of the Labour Asians Society, brought historical context to Diwali, connecting it to the Labour Party’s vision of equality, shared institutions, and social justice. “The Labour Party’s commitment to equality and opportunity resonates with the message of Diwali—celebrating light, hope, and the promise of a better future.”


The event closed with reflections from Dr. M. Waqaas, President of the Labour Asians Society, who emphasized the significance of Diwali, calling it a celebration of diversity and unity that brings people together across communities.
This celebration was organized by Kirat Raj Singh, Vice Chair of the Labour Asians Society, with contributions from Cllr Dr. G Murtaza and Maria Saroya, who shared personal reflections on Diwali.
